What would you have done in this situation?
You're shopping with your mother in a supermarket. As you're going through the checkout line, there's a holdup with your mother's credit card (it simply won't read out in the ATM machine at the counter). She forgot her checkbook, and she's trying to find another card to use. She digs around for some cash in her purse, but finds none. You have no money on you either. The old man behind you begins to get angry, because it has taken 20 minutes. Suddenly, he begins to shove a steel shopping cart into your mother's backside. You tell him to stop, but he keeps on doing it, over and over. An argument begins, and you're ready to punch the old timer out. Then a manager comes by to stop the whole thing. I actually observed this in the supermarket where I worked. What would you have done if it were the teenage son with his mother you in line?
Since what the oldster did amounts to battery and even assault against your mother, I'd call the police immediately, after putting a stop to the on man's attack. You have a right to defend your mother within reason.
THEN, I'd discuss what happened with a good lawyer to see if there is a "cause for action." Stores have an expectation to keep their customers safe, particularly while making transactions.
Where many have given you bad advice is retaliation against the old man. THAT is against the law and would be in jail sitting beside him. However, assisting your mother is within reason (having her get to a safe area, and if necessary, immobilizing the old bastard's cart to keep him from causing further injury to her), unless of course her son is only 10 years old or something along those lines.
I personally couldn't work in a supermarket. It's disorienting and modern people have nosedived to complete incivility.
