Why does my cat lick plastic?
I call my cat "the bag lady." She loves plastic grocery bags. She licks them, plays in them, and sometimes runs around the house with them stuck around her waist. Does anyone else’s cat do this? Does anyone know why?
I watch her when she plays with them and don't leave them down when no one is around.
Nobody really knows for sure, and there are two primary ideas out there. Some people lean toward the idea that they're attracted to the bags because of the oils/chemicals used to make them. Others believe they're attracted to the consistency/sound. Either way, I've had a few through the years who enjoyed licking plastic bags. I agree with the poster who recommended supervising her. If I don't keep an eye on my Siamese, he'll be all wrapped up in a shopping bag before I know it. He not only licks them, but likes to drag them out into the floor and roll in them. He acts like it's catnip coated or something. He's gotten his leg caught on more than one. Also, be cautious about leaving other plastics out too. If she like shopping bags, she may also like cling wrap, balloons or cellophane wrapping from packages and such. She could end up ill if she manages to swallow a smaller piece of plastic like that.
