a) How much wheat would Mr. Crane have to put on the 24th square? b) How much total grain would the traveling?
CLASSIC PROBLEM - A traveling salesman (selling shoes) stops at a farm in the Midwest. Before he could knock on the door, he noticed an old truck on fire. He rushed over and pulled a young lady out of the flaming truck. Farmer Crane came out and gratefully thanked the traveling salesman for saving his daughter’s life. Mr. Crane insisted on giving the man an award for his heroism.
So, the salesman said, “If you insist, I do not want much. Get your checkerboard and place one grain of wheat on the first square. Then place two grains of wheat on the next square. Then place four grains on the third square. Continue this until all 64 squares are covered with grains of wheat.” As he had just harvested his wheat, Mr. Crane did not consider this much of an award, but he soon realized he made a miscalculation on the amount of wheat involved.
Last time I read this old chestnut, a few days ago, it was a Persian King who was shown the new game of chess by an inventor and was so pleased he asked him to name his reward, which he asked for in grains of rice on the same double-up formula. Which was readily if foolishly agreed to, too ...
This is an exercise in people's inability to grasp how doubling and redoubling a number rapidly reaches astronomical levels.
The other similar exercise is folding a piece of paper i.e. doubling its thickness each time.
The latter exercise leads to the conclusion the pile of paper will reach to the moon after 42 folds, and the grain of wheat one leads to the conclusion that the farmer would have to empty and exhaust all the storehouses of wheat in the world and still not have met his debt in full to pay out (2^65 - 1) grains of wheat.
Both results are surprising to the uninitiated, they cannot "believe it". But the point is more that it is beyond their experience and the kind of numbers they deal with in daily life. Which is the basis on which they form their beliefs.
The farmer thought the salesman was being modest (based on his beliefs and the scale of wheat transactions he normally conducted).
In fact the salesman was being greedy, though it seemed like he was being modest to the farmer who did niot realise how big the numbers were and how quickly they would escalate beyond his means to pay.
As 2^10 = 1,024, every extra ten powers of two means a thousandfold (in round figures)increase in the number of grains of wheat.
The 10th square alone "costs" the farmer 1,024 grains of wheat.
The 14th square alone "costs" the farmer 16,384 grains of wheat.
The 24th square alone "costs" the farmer 16,384,000 grains of wheat (16 million grains)
The 34th square alone "costs" the farmer 16,384,000,000 grains of wheat (16 billion grains)
The 44th square alone "costs" the farmer 16,384,000,000,000 grains of wheat (16 trillion grains)
The 54th square alone "costs" the farmer 16,384,000,000,000,000 grains of wheat (16 quadrillion grains)
The 64th square alone "costs" the farmer 16,384,000,000,000,000,000 grains of wheat (16 quintillion grains)
This suffices to see that the farmer has got rather more than he bargained for when he agreed to the salesman's demands.
My suggestion to the farmer would be to try and limit his liability by arguing
(1) that as checkers is only played on 32 of the 64 squares on the board he should stop after 32 squares and not carry on to the 64th square.
(2) that placing grains on the board till the board is full is what he agreed to, but he had not agreed to the grain spilling over off the board so if the salesman would care to place wheat on the board till it is full but stop when the first grain tumbles off the edge of the board ... he is happy to keep his word.
This might be called the Portia Gambit (being agreeable to Shylock getting his pound of flesh but not one hair over the weight of a pound of flesh or Shylock's own life being forfeit if it is so).
