How do you tell a cat-lover you don't want anymore cats?
I just moved in with my boyfriend - we got a house together. It's a very small house. When we were dating earlier I knew he loved cats. He had two black cats of his own. Well, his dad was dying of cancer and his dad loved those kitties. His dad died while we were together, and we took the youngest kitten with us when we moved. I was always a dog person, and while we were dating my mother got me a maltese puppy for my birthday. We moved 2 months after I got the puppy and we couldn't take him with us. He was too little to be alone in that house, and he couldn't make it up the stairs. I miss him. So after we were at our house for a while I got a white kitten from the Humane Society, kinda to replace the loss of my puppy. Now, my boyfriends on a roll, he wants more cats, he brought one home and I had to take it back cause he was so mean! I dont know how to tell him to stop - i told him i didnt want more, but he just can't stop. ANY ADVICE?
I think you did the right thing in returning the last one. If you truly don't want anymore cats, you may have to keep returning them until he gets the hint.
Some shelters and breeders require references and the consent of all members of the intended adoptive home prior to releasing an animal. Each time he brings one home and you have to return it, you may want to let the place know your boyfriend does not have the consent of everyone in the household to bring home more animals. It'll start eliminating the places he can go to get one.
You could also try to him about the practicality of it. Proper care of a pet can very expensive: immunizations and vaccinatons, checkups, good quality food, etc. There's also the upkeep of your home: litterbox maintenance, shedding, babysitting when you want to go away, etc. Just keeping up with one pet can be tough.
