How many languages do you speak and does it really help to be multi-lingual?
Hello - Previet - Salam - Ni Hao Ma - Aloha - Khushamdeed - Namaste - Shalom - Bon Jour - Velkommen...!
I am an English Canadian, and I speak English and Japanese, as well as the French I learned in high school. The French has not been very useful, so I have forgotten most of it. The Japanese has been very useful, and got me a very well-paying job as an interpreter. It also helped me experience and participate in a culture so different from my own that I learned to see myself and my own culture in a new way.
I think being multi-lingual is useful if you learn something from it... I tend to be a thinker, and learning that speakers of another language (Japanese in this case) think in different ways has been mind-opening. I have never used my French enough to get that experience out of it, but I suspect that French speakers also see the world (society, human relationships, nature) differently than English speakers do. I am sure that is one of the reasons things get a little rough at times between the two here in Canada.
One of the first useful things I learned when I got good at Japanese is that common sense is only common to the people who share it! That little eye-opener helped me head of a lot of misunderstandings when I worked as an interpreter.
