Is it OK to spay my Golden at 5.5 months?
The vet said "about 6 months" and I wanted to schedule it for a time when I had a couple of days off to pick her up and watch over her afterward. She will be 2 weeks shy of 6 months on the date I have made the appointemnet for, but now I am reading things about growth problems, etc. Any vets out there? Thanks.
Sorry--that should be "appointment."
Sure is!! The reason why we recommend spaying at (or before) 6 months is to eliminate the chance of her reaching sexual maturity by going into her first heat cycle. There is no harm in having her spayed a few weeks early. No worries! Enjoy your girl!!
ADD: I do not recommend waiting to spay her until after her first heat cycle. If you wait, you are putting her at risk for pyometra, a potentially fatal infection. Also, when you allow a dog to go into their first heat cycle (even if you spay directly after the cycle) you are greatly increasing her risk of mammary cancer. Not to mention ovarian cancer....
The only 'con' of "early" spaying I have ever seen in all my experience has been the dog grew slightly taller then normal.
